Gualpopa
Tradition: Cream Paste Fine Ware
Group: Gualpopa
Type: Gualpopa Polychrome
Variety: Geometric & Mono
Phase: Late Acbi, Acbi/Coner Transition, primarily Early Coner, Late Coner
The Geometric and Mono Variety mainly took the form of (sub)hemispherical bowls with direct rims and rounded lips. This type is more commonly found in burial locations than residential. The surface is treated with an orange slip, and then decorated with red and black motifs. Typical motifs consist of monkeys, “C”, “G”, “S”, “V”, spirals, and whorls. Most interior surfaces have been slipped orange and have a red band on the rim. Fine polishing is the last touch of the surface treatment.
Tradition: Cream Paste Fine Ware
Group: Gualpopa
Type: Gualpopa Polychrome
Variety: Glyphic
Phase: Late Acbi, Acbi/Coner Transition, primarily Early Coner, Late Coner
The Glyphic variety commonly took the form of (sub)hemispherical bowls with direct or tapering rims and rounded or squared lips, or that of flaring-walled bowls. The exterior surface would be slipped and decorated with red- and black-painted motifs. The motifs include both glyphic and pseudoglyphic motifs, which were usually more abstract. The rim was decorated with a single black or red band, or a red band above two black bands. The interior was normally slipped orange and had a red-slip band on the rim.
